Spatial modelling

Optimising >3,000 demand and >200 service points

Geospatial, i.e. Geographic, modelling is about creating a map inside a computer with specific geographic locations, districts, areas etc. It might also contain statistics, like the number of people that live in each district.

On top of this model we then run software tools that can produce different ‘what-if’ analysis on the data. Something simple might be to find out how many people live within 20 Kms of some specific location.

More complex questions might be to find the right combination of locations to cover the whole population within 1 hour drive time or altering the type of service centre based on the level of demand.

How Can Geospatial Modelling Help You?

Map showing area served by different locations

The main areas where geographic modelling is used are service provision and route planning. Service provision is about providing a service to a geographic area within some constraint, such as travel time. Examples are:

  • Where are the best places to locate clinics to provide easy access for patients?
  • What are the likely change in demand which some rearrangement of service centres?
  • How many logistic centres are needed to cover a given area within a pre-set drive time

Healthcare Services

Our healthcare services are all around geographic and demographic modelling. Our models allows you to investigate different options for reconfiguration and look at their possible effects on patient access, demand etc. This provides you with a set of independent, evidence-based findings to inform your decisions (see here for more on spatial modelling).

Our results are presented in a form that communicates the options quickly and powerfully. This is called data visualisation and is a powerful tool for helping all stakeholders understand the output of any consultation process. It is also vitally important when communicating changes to the general public (see here for more on data visualisation).

How Can Our Healthcare Services Help You?

The primary area we work in healthcare service location planning, i.e. looking at options for reorganising or relocating hospitals, clinics, ambulances etc. Typical work we have done is:

  • Looking at the effect of closing a hospital in Derby and its likely effect on attendance in Nottingham hospitals.
  • Choosing where to run TIA clinics and predicting demand.
  • Estimating demand for a particular procedure based on the demographic profile of patients by age and gender.
  • Finding the best places for HIV laboratory testing across South Africa.
  • Modelling the best locations for new clinics in Leeds.

New – Spatial Modeller™

Spatial Modeller™ is our new web-based modelling and visualisation tool  that now allows clients to look at at any modelling results as soon as we have done them. It provides both a presentation mode and an analysis mode which allows detailed exploration of each result.

Data Visualisation

Maps convey a lot of information quickly

Data Visualisation is about taking complex problems and presenting the data in a way that someone else can easily understand the conclusions you have found. It is about communicating findings in an accessible way while retaining the truth that the data represents.

There are lots of techniques (see our information page on this) but it stems from the fact that the eye and the brain are very good at spotting patterns and comparing things if they are presented in the right way.

For instance maps are a good visualisation tool as everybody has some appreciation of maps and locations and they can convey a lot of information quickly.

How Can Data Visualisation Help You?

the eye can compare heights easily

If you have some complex or controversial findings, or you need to communicate with people who do not have the time or inclination to study your findings then you really need to present with real clarity. That is what data visualisation is all about.  Typical times when good visualisation is required are:

  • To the senior management team where clarity and brevity is vital.
  • When consulting with senior staff to show the likely effects of any changes.
  • In public consultations to show how the changes will impact them.

If you cannot present your findings clearly then, even if your findings are right, you will not engage the stakeholders and they may well resist your recommendations.

Our Tools and Methods

Advanced location optimisation algorithms

We have developed many software systems which incorporate state-of-the-art algorithms for geographic location optimisation and transport mapping. These have been developed in collaboration with our academic partners which means they are mathematically sound and robustly tested. Tools are:

  • Location optimisation
  • Capacity estimation
  • Customer trend extraction
  • Route modelling, e.g. public transport access
  • ‘What-if scenario planning

We have also created a number of methods to visualise data, especially on maps. This is important in communicating what may be complex information to all stakeholders.

How Can Our Software Tools Help You?

There are three main benefits to our clients.

  • We can adapt our software tools to your specific needs.
  • Our software make us more efficient at tackling your problems
  • We can provide online tools to allow you to model data yourselves

All of these points make us different from many consultancies that do not have the skills or desire to automate the modelling and make it directly available to their client.
